How to make and forward calls within the EU 95% cheaper

Enjoy up to 95% discount compared to regular call rates when making outgoing calls and forwarding incoming calls to the European Union.

In this article, we will explain how you can benefit from the lower Intra-EU and Local call rates when making calls within the EU.

When making calls

To get the Intra-EU call rates when making calls to phone numbers wthin the EU, ensure that your caller ID (the number shown to the person called) also is a number from within the EU.

To get the Local call rates, ensure that your caller ID is from the same country as the number called.

You can use two types of numbers as Caller ID when making calls

  1. A Sonetel number
A phone number purchased 2019 or later from Sonetel (included free with a paid plan). Your ID and address proof documents should be submitted to Sonetel and approved. This allows you to show your Sonetel numbers to people you call.
  2. Any other verified number
A mobile number or landline you own, outside Sonetel, that has been verified with Sonetel. This is done by adding it to your profile and following the instructions on-screen to enter the verification PIN.

If you have one or more local Sonetel numbers, and have taken care of the steps listed above, then the right number will usually be shown automatically.

You can manually change your caller ID settings here.

The video below provides a quick explanation of how you can configure your caller ID settings.

When forwarding incoming calls

If you receive calls to a Sonetel phone number, and forward them onwards to some phone number in the EU – you need to make sure that the number shown (“Caller ID“) – is a EU number or local number – if want get the lower Intra-EU or Local rates for the forwarded call.

So how can this be accomplished?

Here are the different scenarios, and what you need to do to get the Intra EU or Local rates:

Intra EU rates

  • If your callers have EU numbers
If your callers call from within the EU, and you forward their calls onwards via your Sonetel number to some EU-number, you will get the Intra EU automatically. This is true even if the Sonetel number they call is outside the EU, as the call forwarding destination is a EU number and the “from” number is the original caller’s number – which is an EU number as well.
To be on the safe side, just verify that the call forwarding is set to show the caller’s number (see below).
  • If your callers do not have EU numbers
If your callers call from outside the EU you need to have them call a Sonetel phone number in the EU which you configure to forward calls to a EU number. You need to make sure that your call forwarding setting are configured to show your Sonetel number (the number the caller called). Read more about how do this below. This ensures that both the from and to number are EU numbers – which unlocks the Intra-EU rates.

Sonetel numbers to be shown as Calling Identity must be purchased 2019 or later from Sonetel (included free with a paid plan). Your ID and address proof documents must have been submitted to Sonetel and approved – as this unlocks your ability to show your Sonetel numbers to people you call.

Local rates

  • To get local rates, you need to do this
Make sure that your have a local Sonetel number in the same country that you want forward calls to and that this number was purchased from Sonetel 2019 or later. Make sure that your call forwarding settings are configured to show your local Sonetel number (see below). This ensures that both the from and to number are in the same country when forwarding the call – which unlocks the local call rates.

The Sonetel number shown must be purchased 2019 or later from Sonetel (included free with a paid plan). Your ID and address proof documents must have been submitted to Sonetel and approved – as this unlocks your ability to show your Sonetel numbers to people you call.

How to change your calling identity settings

You can check and change your Calling Identity settings (the phone number to be shown to the person called) for call forwarding here:

  • If call forwarding goes via a User
If your Sonetel phone number is connected to a user, and that user has call forwarding to a EU number, then check the Calling identity settings here. If for another user than yourself, you can see their settings by clicking on the user in the Team list.
